4.5 Lighthouses to Sneaking Candy by Lisa Burstein

Sneaking Candy

I received an advance copy of Sneaking Candy in exchange for an honest review… and honestly: this book is awesome.  It’s funny, fresh and very, very well written.  As soon as I finished reading this book, I put all other titles by Lisa Burstein at the top of my TBR list. Gonna start with Pretty Amy, but first: go buy and read Stealing Candy.  Merry Christmas to YOU!

This is a fun, quick read – but full of so much humor, English Lit shout-outs and surprises, it is anything but fluff.  In addition to the awesome content, the storytelling is stellar!  Lisa Berstein has a tremendous talent for writing hilarious one-liners, creating unique circumstances for her characters and revealing personality quirks that are authentic and entertaining.  All fans of New Adult fiction will enjoy is book, not just because it is NA, but because it is about writing/reading/enjoying this extremely popular genre.  It is also about a woman coming of age (again) in grad school, proving that all journeys have crossroads.

Sneaking Candy is about Candice, a young woman who must pay her way through Graduate School; her affluent parents refuse to pay tuition because she chose to study Creative Writing over Medicine.  Candice’s roommate convinces her to self-publish erotic romance eBooks as a way to make extra cash (and challenge her creative writing skills).  She begins writing under the pen name “Candy Sloane,” and soon the stories grow in popularity.  Candice must keep “Candy” a secret from her university, or she will have to forfeit the scholarship that makes it possible for her to attend school.  While balancing her graduate studies and her NA pseudonym, Candice also juggles feelings between her brainy professor and a hunky barista.  It is an extremely amusing experience – she either reigns in or summons  “Candy’s” influence as circumstances arise.

Book Blurb:

All I ever wanted was to make a name for myself as Candice Salinas, creative writing grad student at the University of Miami. Of course, secretly I already have made a name for myself: as Candy Sloane, self-published erotic romance writer. Though thrilled that my books are selling and I have actual fans, if anyone at UM found out, I could lose my scholarship…and th

e respect of my faculty advisor, grade-A-asshole Professor Dylan.

Enter James Walker, super-hot local barista and—surprise!—my student. Even though I know a relationship is totally off-limits, I can’t stop myself from sneaking around with James, taking a few cues from my own erotic writing…if you catch my drift. Candy’s showing her stripes for the first time in my real life, and I’ve never had so much fun. But when the sugar high fades, can my secrets stay under wraps?
