On The Registry series:
Q: What was the inspiration for this series?
A: I tried to think about an evil version of facebook. I think The Registry all spiraled from there.
Q: Can you describe the process of world building?
A: I have a notebook that is filled with ideas about the world the Registry is set in. They will hit me at random times too, and I always run and write them down right away. Sometimes they pan out and sometimes the ideas don’t gel with the rest of the world. I think it’s important to make sure I get them on paper either way.
Q: What was the most difficult thing about writing The Collection?
A: I did have a hard time making the Collection a stand alone story along with the continuation from the Registry and set up for the Alliance. It is important to make sure the “middle book” has a strong plot and doesn’t get lost in the shuffle. I am really long I have such strong support from my editor and my agent or else I would have cracked!
Q: What was your favorite or chapter/ scene to write?
A: Anything and everything from Grant’s point of view. Sometimes I skip ahead just to write from his side. It’s a release for me trying to think of evil things!
Q: Is there a message you want your audience to take away from this series?
A: I want them to walk away and say “that was a fun ride”. Any other messages they may pick up on are great, but I think enjoying the story is the most important aspect of reading.
Q: What actors/ actress would you choose to play Grant, Carter, Andrew and Mia?
A: I really struggle with this, since a lot of the actors I originally liked are aging out of the roles. But off the top of my head:
Mia – Elle Fanning
Grant – Matthew Goode
Carter – Cole Sprouse
Andrew – Logan Lerman
Q: Why do you write for the teen/ young adult genre?
A: There aren’t a lot of rules when it comes to writing YA. Also, I enjoy reading this genre lots!
Q: What are you currently reading?
A: I don’t “casually” read a book. Normally I will start and finish it in the same day or within 3 days at the most. I have been reading a lot of romance lately, but this weekend I am hoping to start (and finish) Ignite Me.
Q: Do you have a specific time of day you prefer to write?
A: I tend to write at night, pretty much between the hours of 5 and 10 pm.
Q: Plotter or Panster?
A: Plotter for sure. I need structure or I’ll make a jumbled mess!
Q: Do you have advice for getting past Writer’s Block?
A: When I’ve gotten stuck I either talk it out with my Agent, or take a long drive with no music. I really think it’s a personal method though, because I know lots of people who find great inspiration by listening to music.
Q: What project are you working on now?
A: I am working on The Alliance, the final installment of the Registry series. It is a little bitter sweet to finish off this story. Once it’s all wrapped up I do have some other ideas I am excited to start on though!
