Iron Pendulum by Megan Curd
A month ago, Avery thought the world ended outside Dome Four. Thought she was one of the few of her kind. Thought the war that brought the human race to the brink of extinction was over.
But a month can change everything.
After fighting to escape a tyranny she didn’t even know existed, Avery has had to come to grips with all the secrets she’s uncovered. But more secrets continue to come to light, revealing how little of her world she truly knew. When evidence starts to show that Dome Four might be under siege, Avery knows what she must do.
Returning to the dome she longed to escape is a challenge for Avery, but now she knows there’s corruption lurking in the shadows. A massive steam shortage leaves half the dome without power, and people are falling ill. Dying.
And they’re blaming Avery.
A month can change everything. One more month could kill everyone. The clock is ticking.
He fell forward but caught himself at the last second. Sari clung to Alice and me as we lifted her from the filthy water, silent tears streaming down her pale face. Jaxon stumbled forward, his hand on the cement wall to support himself while he tried to regain his strength.
And that’s when I saw the note floating in the refuse. The ink ran as water soaked the paper, but it was still legible.
I know you’re down here. Consider this your warning.
Keep pressure on the wound. I’ve seen your ability to tie a tourniquet. You should heal. Eventually.
Have a wonderful evening.

“Guys, we have a problem.” I heard the words escape my lips, but couldn’t remember forming the sentence.
Jaxon coughed out a laugh. “Besides the usual laundry list?”
“Um, yeah. Xander knows we’re down here.”

Before I get into how much I love Iron Pendulum, I have to comment on how much I love the book cover – same goes for book one, Steel Lily. Beautifully crafted images that reflect the awesomeness of the books themselves. Kudos to the team behind The Periodic Series, especially author Megan Curd. If you enjoyed Steel Lily, you will equally love this book. If you have not yet read these books and are looking for an entertaining adventure with creative steampunk/ fantasy elements, you need to add this series to your TBR. The world building, original plot and fantastic characters are tremendous.
Avery Pike returns to Dome 4 to discover a world even more contaminated by poisonous air and corrupt government than when she escaped a month ago. Working together with her team of spies, hackers, and scientists, Avery works against time to save The Traditionalists from genocide project put in motion by The Elite.
Avery is overwhelmed with loss, guilt, responsibility, hatred and fear. Thanks to Jaxon, she also gets stolen moments of love, hope and peace. She must constantly move between ally and enemy camps, and the pressure takes its toll on the heroine. She learns to hold her tongue and dig deep for patience while striving for the ultimate goal: a free and healthy population. Along the way, she must battle the obvious bad guys and a shocking betrayal. If I’m being honest, I suspected the betrayal was coming, but it does not make it any less awful for Avery and her crew.
While there are many characters from Steel Lily in this book, the addition of Dana was a welcome surprise. In fact, she quickly became one of my favorite characters. She seamlessly shifts between Mother Teresa (caring for sick kids) and Momma Bear (protecting her cubs). She brings a soft, tender heart to the harsh environment, and Avery is blessed to have Dana in her corner. The scenes in Dana’s home are among my favorites in the book because there are faces to go with the injustice beyond her walls.
There are also characters I love to hate (cough, cough Erin, cough Xander) and plenty of action to keep any reader riveted to the pages. Even Chapter One is full of surprises, and it only gets better from there. Looking forward to the next installment already. – Kris
